Why should I join Residents 3000?

If you live in Melbourne’s vibrant CBD and you would like to feel part of a “big village” community, then become a member of Residents 3000.

The “3000” comes from the CBD’s postcode.  The association started back in 1992 when no one thought it cool to actually live in the CBD.  That was a place to work.  After work you commuted out to the “burbs”, fighting traffic and arriving home tired and irritable.  The thinking in those days was that living in the CBD was not an option.  Where would you buy your groceries?

Planners of the day changed that forever.  Supermarkets were built, commercial buildings were turned into apartments, laneways became wonderful places to eat and have fun, art and cultural activities expanded and flourished and new flash apartment blocks were built.  People came and liked the lifestyle.

In our recent survey of CBD residents, a large percentage were long-term dwellers ( longer than five years) with no plans to move.  Nearly everything you need for comfortable living can be found within a 100m walk!   CBD dwellers are fit!  They walk or bike everywhere within their neighbourhood.

The city of Melbourne was voted the most liveable in the world.   But it doesn’t just happen.  The community makes it happen.

The City of Melbourne and governments need to be aware of community needs and they need to respond with action.

This is why Melbourne’s CBD needs vibrant and active community groups whose role it is to hear the needs and wants of their members and communicate well with the people in office.  Residents 3000 is one of these groups which has a long-term reputation of responsibly representing the issues and needs of its members.

Communication is a two-way street.  Residents 3000, along with EastEnders (a more localised community group), have monthly meetings at the Kelvin Club (14 Melbourne Place) where influential people in our community, both from government and industry present on various topics.  Each meeting is educational for our members and, at the same time, gives them the opportunity to express opinions.  Residents 3000 tries to be broad in our approach.

That is not all.  It comes back to the “big village”.  The streets are both horizontal and vertical.  Some people feel isolated living within the CBD.

Join Residents 3000 and get to know other people who live in apartments, work in the city or nearby and play here too.  We connect people and build a feeling of community.  After each meeting, we provide refreshments and the opportunity for chatter and discussion.  After a time, new members become part of our community and feel that they have a voice.

We welcome new members and would like you to join.  We “represent”, “support” and “connect”.  Have a look at the web site: www.residents3000.com.au.  It is easy to join from the web site.
