Suited to life in the CBD

Although 24-year-old international affairs client liaison manager Briar Lloyd is used to working side by side with some of the world’s most major cities, her love for ours is quite possibly the strongest.

Migrating from New Zealand in 2010 for her studies, Ms Lloyd completed a Bachelor of Arts, Media and Communications and Politics and International Affairs at Melbourne University.

After completing her studies, Ms Lloyd bounced around the out skirting suburbs before moving into her own apartment right in the heart of the CBD three years ago.

“I’m smack bang in the city now, on Collins St. Sort of between Swanston and Elizabeth,” she said.

“This is the place I’ve been at for the longest. I’m very settled and comfortable there”.

When she made the decision to move out of a share house and live on her own, Ms Lloyd said she originally did not contemplate the CBD as an option.

“I was looking at different places in different suburbs but I found that when it comes to living by yourself, the CBD is actually more affordable and there’s better spaces available, which is quite surprising!”

Ms Lloyd, who has worked in the CBD since she moved to Melbourne, says that living here has had a major impact on her day-to-day, both professionally and socially.

“I save so much money and time on public transport,” she said.

“I don’t have any major commutes at all. It’s very easy and convenient to do everything now, I feel so much more productive and I can get a lot of things done”.

Some people might find apartment living a bit crowded, but Ms Lloyd says she appreciates the security.

“I feel really safe in the city. There’s always people out and about and I feel fine walking down the streets by myself. Especially because I live by myself I enjoy that feeling of always being around people,” she said.

Ms Lloyd not only lives and works in the CBD, but she is a committee member of several CBD social groups as well.

She is a member of private social group Henley Club and is also a leader of its arts and culture working group.

For Ms Lloyd, the CBD has everything she needs.

“It’s so convenient, there’s so many shops and you see more grocery stores opening up all the time. It’s so close to so many attractions like the Royal Botanic Gardens. It was a really good choice moving here”.
