Street violence is on the rise

Violent crime in the CBD soared by nearly 30 per cent last year.

The latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency shows that most crimes in postcode 3000 are violent.

Topping the crime list within our suburb is “crimes against the person”, which include a variety of offences, including bodily harm, threats of bodily harm or other actions committed against the will of the victim.

In 2016, the total number of reports of crimes against the person was 3051 – a 28.2 per cent increase to the 2380 reports made in 2015.

The second highest-ranking crime in 2016 was “property and deception offences”.

Property and deception offences include arson, property damage, burglary, breaking and entering, theft, deception and bribery.

There was only a 7.3 per cent increase in property and deception offences from 2015 to 2016, however the number of reports made were quite high with 13,095 in 2016 and 12,205 in 2015.

“Drug offences” were the third highest-ranking crime in the CBD. Drug offences include dealing and trafficking, manufacturing and use and possession.

In 2015, 1183 reports of drug offences were made. In 2016, there were 1189 reports, marking only a 0.5 per cent increase.

Other offences within the CBD include “public order and security offences”, “justice procedures offences” and “other” which relates to driving and transport regulation offences.

In total, 23,715 reports of crime were made within postcode 3000 during 2016, up by 7 per cent from 2015.
