Space Debris Office

By Chris Mineral

Ava Gardner, Monaco Club 1954, height of summer, watching Quincy Jones on the bandstand conducting the orchestra.

Everyone is waiting for Frank Sinatra.

Commotion at the back of the club, gigawattage spotlight finds Frank Sinatra there, he is in meet-and-greet mode. Frank and Ava look at one another ...

Courtney and Dave look at one another ... they were playing an awesome version of The Died Pretty song Everybody Moves on the RocKwiz 140 TV episode.

Dave Faulkner, singer/songwriter of The Hoodoo Gurus could hear the feeling and intrinsic timing of Courtney Barnett’s musicianship. And the great RocKwiz band. Barnett the muso once played the entire INXS Kick album at an in-store appearance at Pure Pop Records in St Kilda.

At one Reclink Community Cup footy match at Elsternwick Oval, when she played for the Rock Dogs, the footy record listed her name as Barret.  A prescient typo.

A talented songwriter she has written a great song with The War On Drugs Kurt Vile called Over Everything. Courtney and Kurt played a stellar version of this song on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic exhibiting their phenomenal musicianship.

From back porch to porch swing. Jamming like Ry Cooder. Her second album, Tell Me How You Really Feel (Milk Records) has just been released and the promo video is interesting with Courtney Barnett in a huge musical store-room, reminiscent of the magnificent Clemens Musical Services Upstairs Store Room that was reached by a ladder.

She plays sections of the album’s tracks on different instruments. Jelly Roll Morton-esque on piano. Need A Little Time is a sparser more succinct lyrical approach compared to some of her material that has a detailed, layered Helen Garner vibe. Barnett is sublime at detailing everyday moments of profundity. Stylish and dashing. Include in everything.

Double quadruple X-factor superior northside of Gertrude St band Camp Cope have a brilliant new album called How To Socialise And Make Friends (Poison City).

In the instant classic UFO Lighter the singer utilises a Carl Sagan ability to decode strange phenomena and appreciate everyday ephemera. Consider.

Psych-rock band Buried Feathers have released their self-titled debut album via Cobra Snake Necktie Records. Majestic keyboards, submerged vocals, Dave Gilmour infused guitars, smooth like Loop, God Is An Astronaut, John Keating Space Experience. Opening moments of Magnetized, we have a soundtrack to a BBC documentary about an obscure 1970s radio astronomer whose radical ideas about fast evolving lunar transients have been confirmed in the second decade of the 21st century.

Weekends is fuzzed out dirty glam with the party in swing action. Golden sun is setting on BBQ posse, the fadeout is phenomenal. Sink To The Bottom has an immense Bailter Space drive. Has ability.

TFS have recorded a sizzling, smouldering version of The Divinyls’ Back To The Wall.

Congrats to Simon and Lauren celebrating 10 years of Breaking And Entering on 3RRR.
