School holidays in the CBD

School holidays in the CBD

The city will come alive with activities and events for the young and young at heart alike this month, as we celebrate the culmination of another school term for the little people in our lives.

There are a range of free and affordable activities happening around town, and something to keep everyone enthused and entertained.

Federation Square is a one-stop-shop for children of all ages with a packed program of family entertainment planned for the autumn school holidays. There will be dedicated programs running throughout the holidays as well as a rolling Big Screen feature including children’s content from ACMI, Australian Teachers of Media and the Australian Children’s Television Foundation.

Most of the events are free and will feature a series of dance and drum performances showcasing traditional dance and music from the Pacific Islands, and a collection of giant-sized games in the Square, including Connect Four, Chess and Jenga.

ACMI will be hosting their Kids’ Flicks series until April 25, and will be screening a selection of children’s films at the family friendly ticket price of $7. Highlights include Moomins on the Riviera (PG) and Oscar-nominated Song of the Sea (unclassified all ages).

For creative types, ArtPlay at Birrarung Marr is hosting a range of arty and inventive events over the school holiday period. ArtPlay is a space for children of all ages, from babies to 12 year olds, where creativity comes alive and imaginations are encouraged to run wild.

The ArtPlay Autumn school holiday program includes the MSO Ensemble workshop, where children have the opportunity to collaborate with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to create a new piece of music, and Kitchen Art, which sees the contents of the kitchen cupboard become everyday art materials in this workshop led by artist Chaco Kato.

The Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium has invited some friends to visit during the school holidays and they’re pretty cute! The adorable king penguin chicks, Derrick and Arthur, have been dubbed “Melbourne’s coolest chicks” and are keeping their parents on their toes as they find their feet on the ice.
