Make the most of May

Make the most of May

By Sarah Harrison

Make the most of after five in May with fundraising for charity, live music and a week of very good beer across the city.

Good beer in the city

Now in its fifth year, Good Beer Week is hitting Melbourne again this May with a huge range of events happening in the city alone between May 16 and 24.

Learn the art of making biltong at the Hotel Spencer before a five-course degustation dinner ($95) of Western Victoria grass fed Angus beef paired with craft beer with an African twist.

Join Queen Street Rescue for Crafty Cans and celebrate the fashionable return of the tinny while you munch down on bar food crafted out of canned produce ($25).

Get into some “goatfusion” at East End Den as teams contend for the best aromatic infusion using Mountain Goat Beer and a chance to win a gift card at the Goat Brewery Bar ($30).

It’s time for Eat Street 2015

If you love a good party filled with excellent food and a highly worthy cause to get dressed up, Eat Street is the event for you.

The high-end foodie fundraiser will be held at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins on May 19 and will feature some of Melbourne’s best culinary talent and drink experts.

Running for more than 15 years, Eat Street has raised over $1million for different children’s charities and this year is partnering with Variety to celebrate 40 years of helping Aussie kids be kids.

Aptly, this year’s theme is Around the World in Forty Dishes, promising a broad range of cuisines from hawker food to French and with beverages to match.

Guests will graze their way through the evening on entre-size signature dishes from over 30 of Melbourne’s finest including Cumulus Inc, Union Food, Estelle Restaurant, Saint Crispin, Flower Drum, Huxtable, Pei Modern and No. 35, plus added sweetness from Le Petite Gateau and Ganache.

Sip on a broad range of beverages from Perrier Jouet, Campari, Dal Zotto Wines, Cascade, Diageo and many more, all inclusive with your ticket.

Join Eat Street 2015 on their journey around the world for a cause.

Tickets are $160 each or book a group of 11 people and only pay for 10. www.eatstreetmelbourne.com

Nights at Ruby’s Music Room

Switch off after five and kick back to the sublime, toe tapping sounds on offer each night at Little Lonsdale’s local jazz resident, Ruby’s Music Room.

Enjoy tunes from the Steinway D Grade Piano with regulars like Peter Voglis (every Tuesday 6pm to 8pm), or Dana Czerski with Nicolai Sanadza on the cello on May 23.

Experience Macedonian contemporary jazz band, Jazzobell Deux, as led by pianist, vocalist and composer Andreana Jovanovikj-Micanova, at Ruby’s on May 8.

Or just go along and see what’s playing on the night while you enjoy a drink and a bite in this vibrant city venue.
