Cervical cancer research trial

Cervical cancer research trial

A world-first clinical trial is running in Melbourne with the help of a swathe of CBD-based practices and doctors.

The Compass Trial is the largest clinical trial ever to be conducted in Australia, aiming to recruit 82,303 women. The trial researches the most effective strategies for optimising cervical screening in human papilloma virus-vaccinated women.

City-based participants are: Midtown Medical Clinic; Galleria Medical Centre; Collins Place Medical Clinic; Medical One – QV; William Angliss Medical Centre; and LaTrobe Street Medical.

Participating general practitioner Dr Anita Muños of Midtown Medical Clinic said she was honoured to contribute to the data that would ultimately improve screening processes here and around the world.

“This trial is a powerful example of women helping other women,” she said.

“If we can confirm the best way of screening using the HPV test, the Compass Trial will completely change the direction of how we screen and prevent cervical cancer globally.”

The VC Foundation and Cancer Council initiative is looking for 8000 more Australian women aged 25-38 years to participate in the trial.
