White Night Melbourne

White Night Melbourne

Watch the city transform from dusk til dawn!

White Night was originally founded in 2002 in Paris. Since then, more than 20 major cities around the world have held a White Night event. Melbourne joined the party in 2013 and thanks to the State Government, White Night Melbourne is back to take over the CBD starting at 7pm on February 18 and finishing 7am on February 19.

In a celebration of creativity, White Night Melbourne uses installation, lighting, exhibitions, film, music, street performances and interactive events to transform the city into something made of pure magic.

This year’s theme, according to the White Night website was motivated by a quote from French writer, poet, aristocrat and journalist Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

“Night, the beloved. Night, when words fade and things come alive. When the destructive analysis of day is gone, and all that is truly important becomes whole and sound again.”

The theme will focus on the four pillars of creativity: inclusion, accessibility, engagement and innovation.

With a variety of events on the 2017 program, there’s sure to be something to tickle everyone’s fancy.

Dive into the fun of Seadragon’s Lair by Sheree Marris and Lisa Greenaway, a totally immersive underwater experience set in the State Library’s famous LaTrobe Reading Room. Watch as the dome disappears under a wall of water and you come face to face with schools of fish and explosive sea sponges.

Through the use of animation, soundscapes and underwater cinematography, you are instantly transported to Port Phillip Bay and all the beauty that lurks beneath its waters. Just watch out for the armies of spider crabs!

Pay tribute to Prince and take part in Purple Rain on Little Lonsdale St. French artist Pierre Ardouvin is back with his popular sensory exhibition that invites participants to pick up an umbrella and literally walk through purple coloured rain showers.

If you’re needing a little break from all the excitement, White Night has you covered. You can find a community of couches on Lonsdale St at the Lonsdale Lounge Cinema. Family movies will be shown from 7pm – 11pm, and from 11pm onwards it’s short films, documentaries and animations for the big kids.

Dance to the music of Melbourne’s multiculturalism at The World – Live. 12 hours of live music and dance from a selection of the 140 cultures found in the City of Melbourne will be held at Birrarung Marr on the Lower Terrace.

Melbourne’s history is memorialised in its statues, but for one night only you can see who these immortalised men want to be or could have been today. The Secret Life of Statues by Mitch Gow and Eloise Kent transforms the Melbourne pioneers into mermaids, punks, queens and astronauts through installations all over the CBD!
