Want to give something back?

Want to give something back?

By Kathryn Anderson

If you’re looking to give something back, why not join Viva Physio’s Class for a Cause?

It’s a free Pilates mat class at 1pm every Thursday where your gold-coin donation goes straight to support local Melbourne charities.

Many of us a short on time for both exercise and charity work so this is a great opportunity to combine the two!

You can support the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia this month and Diabetes Victoria next.

As far as your own physical fitness, the classes give you an opportunity to stretch and move your body in a controlled and comfortable way while being taught the principles of activating your deep stomach muscles.

The class is ran by a physiotherapist to ensure all exercises are safe and supervised.

People of all experience and levels of experience are welcome.

Details: 1.00-1.45pm every Thursday; Call 9663 2043 or email [email protected] to book.

A mountain of a challenge Giving something back on a mountainous scale is the City of Melbourne’s Kate McInerny who will be climbing Mt Kilimanjaro in November for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s “Save a Man, Kilimanjaro Challenge 2014”.

I caught up with Kate to find out about her enormous adventure.

How did you become involved in this project?

“I was looking for an opportunity to do something charitable, and to possibly combine it with my love of travel.

As my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer seven years ago and passed away in December 2013, the stars aligned when I discovered this challenge.”

What are you doing in preparation?

“Training, training, training! As well as cardio, strength and endurance at the gym, I have been running the 1000 steps on weekends.”

Kate is no stranger to altitude.

After doing high altitude training when she previously scaled Everest Base Camp her body is well prepared for Kilimanjaro’s 5895m.

Leapfrogging the $4,000 fund-raising target proposed by the foundation, Kate has already raised more than $10,000 for this amazing cause.

A healthy event for women

Join over 10,000 other women this year for Women’s Health Week, running from September 1 to 5.

Hosted by Jean Hailes, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving women’s health, this year’s focus will on the connection between women’s confidence and their health.

It’s a free event which is mostly online but there are meet ups, seminars and sessions being held in all corners of the country.

The launch party will be held at our very own Federation Square from 7am to 3pm on Monday, September 1 where you can expect fun, activity, show bags, freebies and most importantly an opportunity for women to collaborate on the many issues surrounding their health.

Dr Jean Hailes was a GP and a strong advocate for women’s health.

She said “If a woman is in good health, her family, community and the society around her also benefit” – words that will resonate with those of us who are mothers, or who have journeyed with an influential mother.

If you’d like to become involved, go to www.womenshealthweek.com.au or look for the hash tag #WHW2014.
