Students of the William Angliss Institute prepared and presented a fundraising lunch for the Father Bob Maguire Foundation at the Angliss Restaurant on May 5.

The event was held to raise money for the education of 17 under-privileged students.

The two-course lunch was planned and catered by diploma of events, cookery and hospitality students who worked closely with Beverley Pinder from Rowland Pinder PR and Andrea Cafnik, events and fundraising co-ordinator for the Father Bob Foundation.

The event encouraged a great sense of community, with Ms Pinder’s husband Russell Mortimer’s company, QA Software, being the first donor to the fund.

The diploma of events students organised the layout and styling of the venue and ran the luncheon themselves, including student Veronica Scanlan acting as MC.

“It’s been a fantastic opportunity to assist in the organisation of a real life event and at the same time know we are contributing to such a worthy cause,” Ms Scanlan said.

Guests were also treated to an incredibly moving speech by Catherine McGregor AM, who spoke about her journey through gender transition and the importance of education and diversity in our community.

Previous recipient of the Father Bob Maguire Foundation scholarship fund, Moira Apiti-Civcic also spoke about how the scholarship provided her with extraordinary educational opportunities.

Ms Apiti-Civcic received the scholarship during her high school years at Presentation College Windsor. She is currently studying a double degree in law and Maori and pacific development.

“Without that scholarship, I would not be the woman I am today,” she said.

“PCW gave me an exceptional education and it’s shaped me to be a very worldly person.”
