Raise your tea cups to the royal couple

Separated by distance only, Melbourne’s Lady Mayoress Committee (LMC) celebrated the royal wedding in style with a high tea at the Windsor Hotel on May 14.

The official proceedings for the local celebration were heralded by a town crier greeting guests and ushering them into the grand ballroom of the Spring St hotel.

The spectacular setting was further enhanced by Amore Duet, opera singers Stephen Coutts and Samantha Robertson, who presented some of their favourite wedding repertoire.

Guests were given a mini-tiara to get into the royal wedding mood and life-sized cardboard cut-outs of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle added an authentic touch.

The idea for the high tea, supported by Hotel Windsor, gathered momentum following a letter to Prince Harry penned by Cr Susan Riley as co-chair of the LMC inviting Prince Harry to the High Tea, only five days prior to his big day.

Congratulating the much-loved prince on his decision to marry, Cr Riley said: “We would be delighted if you were to join the Lady Mayoress Committee of the City of Melbourne in honour of your forthcoming nuptials.”

As imagined, there has been no response from the Prince, but instead, the CEO of the Prince’s Trust Australia, Janine Kirk presented a keynote on the wonderful work of the charity established in honour of the bridegroom’s father.

A large card was signed by all guests and have been sent to the newly-wedded couple.

And, as always, the charity component will comprise a donation, and this time it is $5000 to the Lighthouse Foundation’s Mums and Babies Program. Lighthouse Foundation founder and former Melburnian of the Year, Susan Barton also attended..
