History of protest on show

A free exhibition showcasing Melbourne’s history of street protests takes over Town Hall’s City Gallery until August 11.

The WE PROTEST! Exhibition features photos, posters and flyers from Melbourne’s rallies dating back to as far as 1916.

The demonstrations on display range from social justice issues to international causes and to farmers’ welfare.

Cr Kevin Louey said the exhibition put on show Melburnians’ passion for democracy.

“WE PROTEST! shows how Melbourne’s streets, parks and open spaces have been open to anyone with a barrow to push, placard to wave or slogan to shout,” Cr Louey said.

“With countless demonstrations taking place every year on all manner of social and political issues, this free City Gallery exhibition will appeal to anyone who has ever taken to the streets for a cause they are passionate about.”

The exhibition curator Malcolm McKinnon interviewed activists, a police officer and a dairy farmer for a short film.

WE PROTEST! runs at City Gallery on Swanston St until August 11. Entry is free.
